The Teen Zone: a mall grows in Baghdad
If there's one thing Iraq has showed us it's that the U.S. is not so good at nation building. But one thing we are good at is mall building. So it's about time the Bush administration decided to screw all the democracy crap and just play to our strengths. This week, plans were announced to turn much of the Green Zone into a mall, complete with luxury hotels and condos.
It's apparently part of an effort to create a safety "zone of influence" about the $700 million U.S. Embassy being built. Which makes sense, because there's nothing that makes you feel safer than Spencer Gifts. In the words of Navy Capt. Thomas Karnowki, planner of the site and mixer of metaphors, "You have to stake a goal in the sand before you can begin to move toward it. Without a vision of what could be, you're just treading water."
So what will the vision be for the Mall of Iraq? Our guess...
