First Draft: Pope uses new language to call Jews a bunch of hook-nosed Christ-killers
"Whaddup, Jews. We cool?"
Pope Benedict XVI released a new, less anti-Semitic, Good Friday prayer on Tuesday. The original prayer, part of the Tridentine rite, called for the conversion of Jews and referenced their "blindness." It also asked God to, "lift the veil from their hearts." The new prayer also calls for conversion, but uses softer language like, "Let us pray for the Jews." Rabbi David Rosen, who has spent the last 20 years working in Jewish-Catholic relations, does not think the edits went far enough. He called the new prayer "disappointing."
Rabbi Rosen, if you think the new version doesn't, "show any sensitivity as to how this new text will be read within Jewish circles," the Pope's first revision was even more divisive. 23/6 has obtained a copy, along with the Vatican's notes.
