DENNIS KUCINICH TIES FOR FOURTH PLACE IN SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARY; CARRIES 0.1% OF VOTERS
Former Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, who officially announced his withdrawal from the race last Friday, stunned the nation with a shocking fourth place finish in Saturday's South Carolina Democratic primary. Kucinich, who abandoned his presidential bid to focus on his re-election to Congress, walked away with a commanding 0.1 percent of the South Carolina vote, in a dead heat with fellow Democratic quitters Bill Richardson, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, and similarly tied with Mike Gravel, who nobody is quite sure whether or not he's still in the race.
Kucinich's fourth place victory puts him just behind Sen. Barack Obama, who took 55 percent of South Carolina's votes, and Sen. Hillary Clinton, who ended the day with 27 percent. The non-candidate also finished within a hair's breadth of third-place candidate John Edwards, who most voters believe is still running, according to recent polls.
Though Kucinich's impressive results have dominated headlines, it is worth pointing out that Barack Obama's first-place finish isn't as exciting as his victory in Iowa, considering he is heavily favored by the South Carolina racial demographic. No one would be celebrating if Hillary won the Island of Lesbos. For Obama, we say congrats on the win, but to be fair, he had them at "What's happening?"
