Rudy's holiday sale: 70% reduction in truthfulness on all claims

At the debate on Wednesday, Rudy Guiliani claims red tie usage among bald lisping men has increased 82% since he announced his candidacy.

While giving speeches on the campaign trail, answering debate questions, or just about any time he opens his mouth, presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani spouts facts and figures like a buttoned-up accountant. A further investigation of Giuliani's numbers by The New York Times, however, indicates that he's spouting figures like a drunk, cocaine-addicted accountant.

Among his untruths: that New York was the only city in America that had a reduction in crime every single year since 1994 (Chicago, too makes this claim), and that during his term city spending went down 7% (it actually went up 3.7%, a 10.7% differential).

Can Americans trust Giuliani? 23/6 has collected some of his more recent statements and would like to offer the candidate a chance to set the record straight.

  • "During my time as New York City mayor, guns were 93% less likely to misfire during a holdup than in the previous administration."
  • "Under my leadership, two-thirds of all pornography stores in Times Square reduced their S&M section by 14%, up 63% from the previous administration."
  • "While mayor, taxi drivers were either 34 to 47% less likely to be offensive smelling, depending on diet and wind direction."
  • "Under Mayor David Dinkins, you couldn't turn a corner without bumping into an African-American. When I left office, I sliced 27% of them off the census rolls."
  • "In the 1980s, artists ran rampant in the city—freely making this, sculpting that, with no regard to who might be offended. Under the successful Citizens Against Art project, by the time I left office, 89% of all artists had been elimated due to suicide, bankruptcy or being priced out of the city, or moved out of the city."
  • "Before I met Judi Nathan, my testicles had shrunk by 15-20%. I immediately launched a city-wide campaign Hey NYC: Pump Up! Testicles Matter. In three years, the average testicle size of New York City males increased about 87%."
  • "Under my mayorship, sex in Gracie Mansion with mistresses increased by roughly 100%."
