Just when you thought it couldn't get weirder, here comes news that Iran's nuclear weapons program apparently no longer exists. You know, the nuclear weapons program that the president said the C.I.A. told him that Iran not only had, but was going to use to destabilize the Middle East? Yeah, that one. Turns out they don't have it. Turns out the C.I.A. was wrong. Again. Who knew? But the funny part is, here's the funny part: Because even when we did know that they didn't have a nuclear weapons program, we still kept talking about it. Like they did. We even talked about the irresponsible people who run Iran and how they were in danger of precipitating WORLD WAR III by continuing their dastardly pursuit of a nuclear weapons program, which we knew, at the time, that they were not pursuing.

And our president even called their president a liar for saying his country did not have a nuclear weapons program, which we continued to insist that they did have, even though we knew they did not. Are you still with me here? The National Intelligence Estimate now says Iran halted its clandestine nuclear weapons program back in 2003. But our intelligence community (and I use the term so loosely you should take precautions it doesn't slip through your fingers like pureed oysters left in the rain) did not tell the president that Iran's nuclear weapons program was halted even through they had evidence that it was, because they did not want to make the same mistake they made when they told the president that Iraq did have weapons of mass destruction about five years ago. So they made an entirely different mistake.

The upshot is, Iraq: no weapons of mass destruction. Iran: no nuclear weapons program. And now it has come to our attention that since our Mideast misadventure has begun, we've lost nearly one billion dollars of material: 190,000 of our own rifles and weapons somewhere in Iraq. So you know what I'm thinking? Weapons of Mass Destruction, intelligence-wise...probably not what you call our specialty.
