BET Disappointed That Obama Fulfills Black Stereotype |
Robert L. Johnson, founder of the Black Entertainment Network (BET), is insulted that Obama "would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood-- and I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in the book-- when they have been involved."
I completely agree with this fragment. For too long the world of politics has ignored the crack-smoking constituency (BET sure hasn't!). Imagine what would happen to dopers if they knew that a self-proclaimed "junkie" was not only able to break his habit, but become one of the most important black politicians in recent history. The population of drug addicts would be decimated; their falling numbers would strip them of their political sway, even after their mass participation in the New Hampshire primary.
And, as we must admit, Johnson knows when someone is offending African Americans. Throughout the past decade, Black Entertainment Network has provided us with shows such as Bobby Jones Gospel, Lift Every Voice, and BET: Uncut, which broadcasts music videos so highly sexualized and objectifying towards women that even OutKast thought it was "kind of like soft porn."
Several hours after Bob's speech, he released a statement through the Hillary campaign saying he had only been "referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else." Well, of course that was Johnson's complaint. Obama was meddling with Bob Johnson's target community. Now who will watch the 50 Cent?
