Why Be a Journalist When Fantasy is Easier?

John Knefel | Bio

Apparently, it's all the rage now to imagine a wacky fantasy land wherein the Democrats get to the DNC, and instead of nominating a candidate for president--like adults-- everybody in Denver gets a little slap happy and we end up with something closer to a crappy Adam Sandler buddy comedy premise than an actual party ticket. Let me explain.

Joe Klein, columnist for Time and a man who analyzes politics like someone is daring him to be the wrongest person alive, has conjured up a simple scenario that goes like a little something like this: The superdelegates get to the convention and decide that neither Obama nor Clinton are viable, so they get everybody together to agree on something new--which is so easy to do this election cycle--and nominate...Al Gore. Oh yeah. I think...I think it's fair to say that Joe Klein shouldn't be allowed to drive a car unsupervised, much less have a national platform from which to waste people's time. "Let's play a little," he says. You know, Joe, there are other things happening in the world. Like...a lot. Come on!

To make matters less relevant, Slate's Akhil Reed Amar wrote a recent column imagining a scenario in which Obama and Clinton run on the same ticket, BUT BOTH GET TO BE THE PRESIDENT! Much like Klein's impossible scenario, the beauty of this plan lies in its simplicity. You see, if Obama runs as president and Clinton as vice president, then after three years, Obama can name Clinton president and President Clinton can name Obama vice president. Then, for the next election, Clinton would continue as president, then after three years, name Vice President Obama the new president! How could that NOT work?!

Can I get paid a lot of money to come up with these ridiculous scenarios? Can I? Or maybe instead of that, journalists and opinion makers could elevate the discourse just a bit. Just a little teensy bit. If you don't have any ideas, just google "news." I guarantee you wouldn't find either of these pieces.
