Taping Over History

Jacob Dickerman | Bio

With everyone in the news on the attack over the CIA destroying a few tapes that may have showed off some minor incidents of torture (maybe), everyone seems to be missing what's really important here. If there's no evidence, then who are we to say that it actually happened? No one, that's who.

Scientists have recently done experiments that showed that our memories are incredibly flawed. You show someone a Photoshopped picture of that student who stood in front of a tank at Tiananmen Square and add in a couple more people, that's how folks remember it happening all of a sudden. There's evidence that shows that every time we remember something, we have just as much chance of recreating the memory as we have actually recalling what happened. So who's to say that that whole "waterboarding" thing wasn't all in your imagination?

In fact, what the hell is wrong with you that you would create a situation where the CIA was encouraging the outright torture of Muslims in horribly inhumane ways? What is it about you that thinks that that's in any way OK? Do you think it's cool that you're such a sick bastard? Maybe we should send you off to a psychiatrist, and he'll put you in a naked pyramid with all the other sickos who brought this strange scenario to the table? Or perhaps we should put wet rags over your face and drown you until you understand that our government would never put rags over anyone's face and drown them? Do you think that would be fun? Would you get your kicks doing that? I didn't think so.

So, let's look at this lapse as the wonderful opportunity that it is. The opportunity to recreate reality in a way that makes us appear to be smaller assholes than we really are. And while we're at it, let's erase a couple other things from our memories. The School of the Americas, where we took people from all over Latin America and taught them how to be torturers and enforcers all over their country in order to stop communism by any means necessary, even if the result was fascism? Never happened! Our overthrow of countless nations all throughout the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, and giving weaponry to everyone from Batista to Fidel Castro? A figment of your memory. Iran Contra? "I do not recall." Thanks, Ollie North! You're a hero to everyone now, and not just those assholes on Fox (especially Hannity).

So, don't get all uppity over a little thing like evidence of illegal activity disappearing, because without the evidence, who knows that it ever happened to begin with? And doesn't that make you feel warm all over? It never happened. And anyone who says it did is about to take a trip to Abu Ghraib.
